George E. Sangmeister

George Sangmeister was elected to Congress in November 1988.  He was one of only eight new members to unseat an incumbent.  He was re-elected to the House in 1990 and again in 1992.  He retired in January of 1995.

            While in Congress, he served on three House Committees; Public Works and Transportation; Veteran's Affairs; and Judiciary.

            In more than 30 years of public service, Sangmeister has held office in every branch of government.  He began his public career as a Justice of the Peace and Magistrate of the Circuit Court of Will County in 1961.  From the 1964-68, he served as State's Attorney in Will County .  From private law practice, Sangmeister was elected in 1972, to the Illinois State House of Representatives for two terms and returned to Springfield as Illinois State Senator from 1976-87.  There he served as both Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Chairman of the Senate Executive Committee.

                        He is married to Doris (Hinspeter) Sangmeister.  He has two children -- Kurt and Kimberly; and has four grandchildren – Jordan, Cole, Keegan and Kinzie.

            He is presently “Of Counsel” with the Firm of McKeown, Fitzgerald, Zollner, Buck, Hutchison, & Ruttle with offices in Joliet and Frankfort .
